How to deal with post covid ( viral ) fatigue

Post viral syndrome has many serious symptoms which often are overlooked or ignored by healthcare professionals. This is mostly because they can not be quantitively measured by regular medical tests. These symptoms include insomnia, joint, muscle and nerve pain, fatigue , headaches, dizziness, heart palpations and many more.

Why do some of us experience post viral fatigue?

Most of the scientific community would simply say – we do not know. But there are scientists and doctors who are working to find answers and treatments. Recently scientists found  that people with Chronicl Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis has metabolic dysfunction. This happens because of problems with our immune system, this process often results in inflammation in many organ systems which patient feels as weird and often severe symptoms. One of the symptoms that strongly supports theory of metabolic dysfunction is post exertion malaise (PES), which is severe fatigue for hours and even days after simple physical tasks. Another frustrating and debilitating symptom that arises from metabolic dysfunction is persistent fatigue.

What are the treatment options available?

Unfortunately there are no magic bullets that will make it all disappear. There are methods and supplements which will help with some symptoms. Some of the supplements that have proven themselves are

  • Meldonium
  • NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)
  • Niacin (Nicotonic Acid).

1. Meldonium

Meldonium has been researched in several studies for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) with promising results. In one study person with CFS was subjected to healthier diet and Meldonium , patient showed increased work performance, decreased heart rate while sitting and other benefits.

Other study got promising results by treating CFS patients with Meldonium and insulin resistance correction medication.Meldonium was originally developed as treatment for heart conditions but in the last decade it has proven that it helps with energy levels, concentration, physical activity and recovery from stress. This possibly is why at one point professional athletes thought that it could be a good idea to use it. Nowadays Meldonium is considered as doping in sports although often sold over the counter and used for many conditions with good results. It is available in 250mg and 500mg dose. If you are thinking of trying it, general rule of any supplement is to start slow and then slowly increase the dosage. That being said, some studies used doses of 1000mg of Meldonium per day and showed decreased symptoms caused by chronic heart failure.

2. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

NAC is an amino acid with powerful antioxidant properties. NAC increases the amount of a substance called glutathione in the body and is widely recommended by practitioners. This helps reduce inflammation and promote immune system health. People with post virus syndrome or CFS often are in constant state of inflammation , our brain gets inflamed which leads to brain problems, like difficulties remembering words, dizziness, memory loss and other problems.

NAC as chronic fatigue treatment

A  trial with 262 participants indicated that taking a N-Acetyl-Cysteine supplement for 6 months supports upper-respiratory-tract and immune-system health. An additional analysis of 8 double-blind, placebo-controlled trials provides additional support for its favour for your respiratory health which could be a big deal after virus like covid or influenza.

3. Niancin

Niacin is a B vitamin that's made and used by your body to turn food into energy. It helps keep your nervous system, digestive system and skin healthy. Niacin (vitamin B-3) is often part of a daily multivitamin, but most people get enough niacin from the food they eat.

In the case of long covid which is very similar to CFS with its symptoms, it is found that virus attacks specific enzyme which does not allow body to manufacture energy by using NAD+. One of the alternatives of manufacturing NAD+ is using Niancin ( Nicotinic acid). The fact that the energy production is disturbed explains much more than fatigue, body is one big living system if one thing fails, it often leads to many complications. In this case one of the complications is mast cell activation. I will not go in further detail, because it gets complicated but if you wish to learn more, you can learn more on this topic here: LINK
